Staff & Volunteer Recruitment

All staff members undergo state and national criminal background checks to ensure their suitability to work with children. For our international staff, background checks are conducted in their home countries and verified through their visa sponsors. Before arriving at camp, staff complete three thorough reference checks to verify their character and past conduct. During the interview process, candidates are clearly informed about our child safety policies, setting expectations around their role in maintaining a safe environment. Full-time staff have their background checks renewed annually to maintain ongoing vigilance.

SUPERVISION & INTERACTION

• To protect every camper’s safety and dignity:
• One-on-one situations are prohibited unless they are visible and within earshot of others
• Campers are never left unsupervised.
• Staff are prohibited from having any unapproved off-hours contact with campers outside of camp programming.
• We foster a culture of respectful boundaries and clear visibility in all staff-child interactions.
Teaching Children About Safety and Consent
At Camp Wakonda, we empower children with knowledge about their own bodies and personal boundaries:
• We teach campers the importance of consent, even for simple gestures like high fives or side hugs.
• Both children and staff understand that every individual has autonomy over their body — no one may touch them without permission.
• Campers and staff receive orientation on appropriate touch, such as side hugs and high fives, to create a safe and respectful camp environment.
• Campers are also oriented that if any adult or camper asks them to keep a secret, they should immediately report this to a safe adult on camp. This reinforces a culture of openness and trust.
