WHERE WORK IS PLAY

Often camp is a place where lifelong friendships begin. Our college-age counselors receive extensive training on how to create opportunities to foster these friendships. Campers grow in self-awareness and an understanding of their natural world through the guidance and leadership of their counselors.

The most important part of a camper’s experience here at Camp Wakonda are the Camp Counselors. We employ exceptional young leaders who embody Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility, the Four Core Values of the YMCA.

All camp counselors at Wakonda can be sure that they are making a positive impact on the hundreds of children who view them as a role model, mentor, teacher and friend!

STAFF

Our staff of college age leaders are all certified by the American Red Cross in First Aid, CPR and have passed a background check. They come from Missouri, across the country and around the world and are hired for their maturity and love of children.

They understand the importance of their role model status and are taught the skills to fulfill that role through an intensive 2-week training. Our pool is staffed with certified Lifeguards and our high ropes course, climbing wall and rock wall are also staffed with certified instructors. There is a health care professional on site at all times to dispense medications and handle any health care concerns.

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING PROGRAM

Sometimes referred to as Campers in Transition, the ‘CIT’ program is designed for teens in grades 11 and 12. This program assists these young adults in their growth and development of leadership, communication, cooperation, compromise and problem solving skills. All of which are important abilities for their futures here at camp, and also in all other aspects of their lives.

CITs will be assigned to observe and assist with a cabin of younger campers, under the observation of the two cabin counselors. CITs will also observe counseling and teaching styles as they shadow morning clinics during their week.

Guest speakers will lead discussions on a variety of topics, including leadership and effective communication. Living in a cabin with 10 younger campers and 2 college-age counselors allows CITs to begin the transition from camper to staff.

CIT WEEKS

Session 3: June 18th – 23rd
Session 5: July 9th – 14th
Session 7: July 23rd – 28th
